A recent study by JiWire, a Wi-Fi provider and mobile ad server, found that most users of its public Wi-Fi services spent more than 30 minutes a day using smartphone apps. 63% of users frequently use apps that require them to give their location to serve specific content. A little more than half were willing to give their location just to receive more relevant advertisements.

Over a third of respondents were more likely to click on a mobile ad that was customized for their specific location. Almost half said that it would not make a difference. Overall, 76% of users preferred ad-supported free apps over paid ones. This presents a huge opportunity for businesses desiring to utilize location specific advertising, as more than one-half of mobile device users had clicked an in-app ad, went to the advertiser’s website, or made a purchase.
Millennial Media, a mobile advertising network, found through a recent study that smartphones account for almost one-half of mobile ad impressions in the US. Even though more subscribers have feature phones, these users have less interaction with advanced mobile content, and therefore only account for one-third of mobile ad views.
iPhones continue to dominate ad impressions within the smartphone category, followed by BlackBerrys and Androids. Androids have seen that largest increase in ad requests, rising 72% month over month. March was the first month the Android phone was one of the three top smartphone operating systems. Requests were up 20% from Apple phones and 25% from BlackBerrys.

On other mobile devices, such as iPads, iPod touches and connected video gaming devices, Millennial Media found that those devices took a significant share of impressions. iPad impressions climbed 713% during the first full week the device was available for purchase. Numbers will only climb as the iPad and similar mobile devices continue to proliferate.

While Apple’s tight hold on the smartphone market continues, the Android has gained significant ground because of its high customer satisfaction and loyalty. Indications that Android also represents a robust mobile app platform also point to a greater share of mobile ad impressions in the future.

The new iPad brings with it exciting opportunities for advertisers and publishers to present their content on a larger and more vibrant iPhone-esqe display.
According to comScore, a digital marketing analysis firm, consumers are intending to purchase the iPad over all other e-readers, such as Amazon’s Kindle or Sony’s Reader. This is most likely due to the fact that iPads can do much more than simply display black-and-white text. comScore’s surveyed respondents intend to use the iPad for Web browsing, music, and e-mail over reading books and newspapers.

While many respondents stated that they would probably not purchase apps for the iPad, a majority intended to purchase specially formatted content for it. Current iPhone and iPod touch users were over two times more likely to purchase newspaper and magazine content for the iPad than those without an iPhone or iPod.

“The tablet and e-reader market is developing at a breakneck pace right now, and Apple’s entry into the market is sure to accelerate mainstream consumer adoption,” said Serge Matta, comScore executive vice president, in a statement. “These devices have the potential to be incredibly disruptive to the way consumers currently access digital content.

There is no question that mobile devices are becoming the next trend for marketers to reach their consumers. Marketing via mobile devices allow companies to reach their target markets anywhere and at anytime! There is an estimated 650 million people worldwide who use “smart” phones to access the Internet monthly and a recent study shows just who these users trust with regards to their services.
According to a Tellabs survey conducted by The Nielsen Company, two-thirds of mobile users around the globe are interested in “smart” services that would feed them information based on personal preferences, location, time of day and social setting.

Looking at the graph provided here, mobile users place a significant amount of trust in their mobile carriers in terms of protecting their information and actions on their phones. They also overwhelmingly selected their mobile carriers as the “most appropriate” provider of services for their devices like phone service, Internet accessibility, and applications.
Within the survey, consumers preferred to find their news, media, and entertainment content provided by their mobile carriers, then followed by other web providers, and then a combination of the two.
When it came to shopping services, however, there was a notable difference: Mobile carriers dropped somewhat in importance, and advertisers became a much more prominent source of information.

US marketers have already begun experimenting with exactly this type of smart shopping service. “Geo-fencing” of “Geolocation apps” provide personalized marketing messages to shoppers based on their location or proximity to a marketer’s store. A recent experiment from a store called 1020 Placecast, piloted a ShopAlerts program that was embraced by mobile users:
* 60% said the location-triggered messages were “cool” and “innovative.”
* 79% claimed to be more likely to visit a store.
* 65% made a purchase.
* 73% were likely to use the service again.
As technology continues to become more innovative and creative, we will soon be living in a world where you cannot escape the annoyances of advertising. Soon enough, we will have ads sent to our phones in correspondence to our physical location and time of day! This is very exciting yet horrifying but I am excited to see what the latest technological advances can do for companies that can benefit consumers.

The number of mobile applications is growing daily pretty soon we won’t even need computers! Marketers are quickly jumping on this trend in 2010- the world of applications will soon grow to an all-time high. Although the spending on social apps will stagnate this year, most marketers have already produced them. “Less than one-half of marketers created either a mobile or social app in 2009, but most plan to invest in a mobile app this year. The iPhone is the platform of choice, followed by Android.” And among those marketers with apps in 09, Facebook was the leading platform.
Social apps were perceived as the top goal for achieving engagement, audience targeting, reach, sharing and branding potential. “The top one-third of advertisers and agencies using mobile apps planned to up their investments by 75% or more. Marketers who used apps reported a growing market, client demand and increased standardization in the app world as reasons to spend more in the coming months.”
Mobile applications by marketers and publishers are the next goal for distribution and discover ability.

15% of advertisers and agencies spent more than 60% of their budgets on promotion in 2009, but more than one-third spent less than 5%. Times are changing, and today consumers want easy access to their favorite sites quickly. Mobile apps are the newest trend for 2010 when it comes to reaching your target audience.

Android is quickly catching up to iPhone to become a mobile platform to be recognized, according to data from ChangeWave Research.
The majority of growth was seen between September and December 2009. Android-based phone purchases jumped from 6% to 21%, which the much-hyped launch of Motorola’s Droid undoubtedly was a big reason for the surge. Thus, Google’s operating system was able to overtake Blackberry in the handset market.

Although iPhone remains the top choice for handsets at 28% of the market, they did see a 4% drop between September and December 2009.
Meanwhile, overall smartphone usage continues to see a steady rise, with 42% of US consumers by December 2009. Data shows that over the past 3 years, usage of smartphones has increased 27%. Additionally, roughly 13% of respondents in the study were planning to buy smartphone over the next 90 days.

According to ChangeWave, iPhone owners were most satisfied with their handsets followed closely by Android-based phones. Satisfaction rates drop significantly with other smartphones. Another common trait the iPhone and Android users have is that they share similar mobile content habits.

Out with the old and in with the new! A new year has begun and keeping up with SEO trends should be at the top of your to-do list. So for 2010 here is a list of trends to keep an eye out for:
- Site Speed – Site speed may be used as a new ranking factor in 2010. Make sure your pages load quickly by decreasing load time. “The order of things on your page will affect its load time, so make sure you’re using proper HTML, and cleaning up your CSS and JavaScript so that users aren’t left waiting when they try to access your site.”
- Mobile – Research done by Neilson shows that there are now 56.9 million people looking for information on mobile web sites, which is up 34% from last year. First you should find out how your site performs on small devices. There are paid services which provide feedback for this. Then, once it is functional, take advantage of Google’s new mobile services and free online coupons.
- Online Video - YouTube was made the second largest search engine last year. With larger companies dropping out, more space is available for small to medium sized companies which could use the attention. So make a video and post it soon!
- Reputation Management Meets Real-Time Search – “When Google put real-time search updates into the SERPs they unleashed a potential online reputation problem of epic proportions. They essentially opened the floodgates to give angry customers immediate power in the search results. You no longer have a window to reach out to an angry tweeter to ask them to amend their update or tone down that Blog post. Google is pulling from tweets, from Blogs, from news, from articles and other Web content and throwing it immediately into your search results, often right above your own site. All of this means that you need to be even more vigilant about monitoring the conversation in an attempt to protect your brand. For a small business owner, your best line of defense is to build a listening station that will help keep you abreast of conversations as they happen.”
- Increased Awareness of Local – “If you haven’t tied up all your local listings and profiles, it is beyond time to do that. The search engines, especially Google, are looking at the consistency and completeness of your local listings in order to rank you for relevant queries. That’s a huge ranking factor that is 100 percent in your control. Take advantage of it!”

Mobile devices are the future of SEO
As research proves that everyday more people are obtaining cellular devices, the cyber population realizes they need to target those individuals immediately. Thus, SEO is going mobile. Remember when the only way to observe websites was from a computer?
Today, marketers are looking for bigger and better ways to specifically target their client’s segmented audiences and mobile SEO seems to be the answer. Consumers want websites to appear on their mobile devices as they view them on their computer screens- unscrambled and organized. Mobile SEO professionals need to make sure the website is clear and easy to see in order for the marketing to be effective.
The near future holds a plethora of options for mobile SEO and research marketers. Mobile SEO will become the norm for consumers to be exposed to new product and service marketing campaigns. Mobile marketing rules and regulations are far from being solidified at this point in time, but with more companies pursuing this new marketing scheme, the closer it will be. In addition, when many companies participate in this option, mobile SEO will become more ordinary to consumers.
The security of mobile SEO is a risk today. Rules and regulations must be known in order to create healthy competition among companies.

The battle for the smartest phone has begun.
Since the beginning of the Blackberry other competitors have been designing and brainstorming for creating the next big hit. In today’s market for new smart phones, that can virtually do anything, competitors are really listening and accommodating their consumer’s wants and needs.
The iPhone, for example, gets a lot of attention from advertisers because studies have shown that their users can recall mobile ads more often than others.
Nielson Q3 data shows that Android users are surprisingly more likely to use mobile internet and video apps than iPhone users. Consumers of both these smart-phones are well ahead of the overall average user.

Most internet usage rates are accumulated from popular social networking sites. Recent studies show that iPhone owners are the most active on social networking sites, but Android owners are not far behind. On the other hand, Android-based users hold higher rates for using other activities such as capturing videos.

“Android users were more likely than iPhone owners to surf the Web and use maps and directions, according to an August 2009 study by the CFI Group. The survey also found that, while overall satisfaction with iPhones was somewhat higher than with Android devices, Android owners were happier than iPhone owners with those functions,” stated by emarketer.com.
According to StatCounter, iPhone uses still hold the top place for most internet visits on a mobile device; more than 38% of mobile web activity came from iPhones. Less than 6% comes from Android-based devices.

The prediction is that the number of mobile users accessing social networks from their mobile devices will reach 607.5 million by 2013, representing 43% of global mobile Internet users. By 2013, the number of mobile social network users will have grown by over 400%.
As shown in the statistics below, mobile social network use is a significant driver of mobile Internet use.

Internet marketing analysts are seeing much opportunity in the two emerging channels – mobile and social.
The dominating US mobile social networks come as no surprise as they dominate the Internet and have the highest users.

“Location-based networks such as Loopt and foursquare have not yet reached critical mass, but are worth keeping an eye on as they work to link people, places and interests. In addition, location-based services can also be used in other contexts to help marketers target social network users with relevant information and offers.” The emergence of location-based networks and services are evidence that entrepreneurs are seeing opportunities with the growing number of mobile Internet users.
Markerters now have an avenue to engage their target audience more directly due to location-aware applications that include a social component.
There is no question that the two emerging channels – social and mobile, contain a large database that marketers could tap into, however, since the two channels combined are still in growth stages, advertising and marketing efforts are beginning as smaller scale programs.
